Have you ever dreamed of relaxing in steaming hot springs surrounded by lush green mountains? Taiwan might not be the first place that comes to mind, but trust me, it should be! Located in Taichung's Heping District, Guguan is like a “hidden” neighborhood perfect for outdoor lovers and people who want to be in nature relaxing.

Guguan’s hot spring water is a high-quality carbonated hydrogen carbonate spring water. The benefits? Imagine silky-smooth water that rejuvenates your skin, calms your mind, and improves blood circulation — all while you soak in the breathtaking scenery.

I recently explored Guguan, and let me tell you, it was so memorable that I wanted to share it with you! In this post, I'll be your guide to Guguan’s history, cool spots to check out, and some helpful tips!

brief history of Guguan

Originally called Meiji Onsen during Japanese rule, the steaming waters were first discovered by local indigenous tribes. Recognizing a good thing when they saw it, the Japanese built a public bath in 1927 — no surprise there, considering their love for a good soak!

Fast forward to after World War II, when the Chinese Nationalists took control of Taiwan. They planned a key route, Provincial Highway 8, which conveniently passed right through Guguan! This turned out to be a game-changer, making Guguan a thriving and popular tourist destination.
