choosing the right airline
There are three different types of airlines to get to Culebra.
There’s Cape Air, a company launched in Massachusetts; JetBlue, a major airline known throughout the United States, launched in Long Island City, Queens; and a local airline called Air Flamenco, a commuter airline launched in Puerto Rico.
When flying, the main factor to consider is finding the most cost-effective way to reach your destination. Air Flamenco is a local service, but the prices for getting from San Juan to Culebra are a little bit more expensive. JetBlue and Cape Air have similar prices, so the most important factor is the timing of your flight from San Juan to Culebra.
Here are some important factors to consider:
1. FLIGHT TIMES
Cape Air flights typically take around 35 minutes, while other airlines may have slightly longer durations.
2. COSTS
Compare prices between airlines to find the best deal for your travel dates.

flying with Cape Air
My experience checking in at Cape Air in San Juan was fairly simple. You just go to the counter and get your ticket. However, the flight time shown on the ticket does not guarantee the time you will board and leave for Culebra.
During check-in, they will ask for your weight and also weigh your luggage to ensure proper balance of the small airplane. After checking in, you wait until the pilot is ready before boarding the plane.
The aircraft is small and intimate, and there are no amenities on board such as bathrooms or TV. Due to its size, the plane is quite loud, similar to a small helicopter.
Our overall flight experience was great, but the only downside was the inefficient waiting times due to the pilot not being ready. Even with our ticket stating a 2:05 PM departure, we ended up boarding at 2:09 PM.
The flight to Culebra was very short, lasting only 31 minutes, thanks to the clear blue skies and great weather.
The flight back to San Juan was a bit crowded, but I got to sit in the front seat next to the pilot — which was an incredible experience!
The seating chart on your ticket does not matter! The most important would be your weight and the weight of your luggage to balance the small plane.

AIRPORT TRANSFERS
Avoid taking the shuttle bus if you have a connecting flight from Culebra. Proceed directly to the terminal to avoid unnecessary delays.
When flying from Culebra to Puerto Rico and connecting to another flight, be careful not to board the shuttle bus if you know where your terminal is located.
The shuttle bus goes to the main entrance of the airport, where you'll need to go through another round of TSA and check-in. We almost missed our flight from San Juan back to New York because of this.
Even though our terminal was close to where we landed, we ended up boarding the shuttle bus because everyone else was doing so, which was a mistake on our part.
PACK LIGHT
Due to weight restrictions, it's essential to pack efficiently. Consider only bringing essential items for your trip.
