Green Growth Chronicles: Wynona's Repotting Journey

hrive After Repotting: Wynona Flourishing in New Plant Pot for Optimal Wellness

Meet Wynona, my Golden Pothos, who has been a part of my life for nearly 2 years. The story of how Wynona became part of my life is intertwined with friendship and the shared joy of plant parenting.

It all began during an adventure with my friend Nik in Bushwick, where we found a cute plant shop. While shopping, Nik chose a Golden Pothos, which she named her Wynona, and later became our apartment baby.

As time passed and we all went on our different paths, Nik entrusted me with Wynona. Even though I was a plant novice, the lush greenery haven Nik created in her room inspired me on this plant care journey.

Observing Wynona's growth over her two-year stay in the same pot has been fascinating. While her lush greenery flourished, the yellowing of her new leaves raised concerns. Researching her symptoms and noticing her roots coming out of the drain hole was a sign that she needed to be repotted.

why repotting matters

Say hello to healthier root development, a crucial step for your green companions to flourish. As you repot and introduce them to fresh, nutrient-rich soil, you're essentially offering them a growth boost like never before.

But that's not all — by repotting, you're opening the door to improved nutrient absorption. Think of it as a plant feast in a new and revitalized setting. Those precious roots, now unburdened by their former confines, can tap into the goodness of the soil with renewed vigor.

Oh, and let's not forget about the stress-busting wonders of repotting. You're preventing the notorious root-bound stress, giving your plant room to stretch its roots and flex its growth potential!

Repotting Preparations: New Plant Pot, Rag for Soil Control, Brown Bag for compost, Wynona in Current Pot, and Soil

the preparations

You can go all-out with a repotting mat, gloves, and every accessory under the sun. But let's keep it real – we're not all professional plant wizards here.

As I watched Nik work her magic, I realized that these extra tools are like that extra sprinkle on a cupcake – nice, but not necessary.

In my cozy city apartment, space is precious, and my style is minimal. So here's the tools I use to repot my plants:

SOIL: No need to break the bank on fancy soil. I snag mine from a local grocery store, and it does the job just fine.

BROWN PAPER BAG: Think of this as your compost zone. Toss your old dirt in here and give it a new purpose in your compost bin.

OLD RAG: I use an old rag as a repotting mat, that way I don’t feel bad about keeping the rag clean AND I can just dump the leftover soil in the brown paper bag

PLANT POT: Size matters! Go for a pot that's about 1-2 inches larger than the previous one. If you're feeling eco-friendly, reuse your old pots or explore some fresh ones. Keep an eye out for some cute pot suggestions below!

Learning as You Go

Embrace the beauty of trial and error – that's where real growth happens!

Messiness? It's all part of the journey. No repotting mat? No worries! Get creative with a gigantic shopping bag, some old towels – honestly, anything you can find. This is your plant playground, after all.

Timing is everything. Think spring and summer – the seasons of blooms and boundless growth. Streets bursting with flowers and lush greens tell the story. It's like plants put on their best outfit for the occasion. That's when you seize the moment to repot. They're in their prime, ready to bounce back even stronger in their new digs.

Now, let's chat about pot sizes. You want a Goldilocks situation – not too big, not too small, but just right. It's all about giving those roots room to breathe and stretch.
