Taiwan Winter Packing List
View from Chaya Zoy in Chiayi
If you’re planning a trip to Taiwan between December and February, you’re probably asking yourself:
Does Taiwan even have a winter? Does it get cold there? Most importantly, what should I pack?
Here’s the deal: Taiwan does have a winter, but it’s milder than what you’d expect if you’re coming from somewhere with harsh winters like New York or Japan… Think of it as a warmer California winter!
With that in mind, let’s get you prepped for your trip!
winter temperatures in Taiwan
DECEMBER
High: 71°F (22°C), Low: 59°F (15°C)
JANUARY
High: 68°F (20°C), Low: 55°F (13°C)
FEBRUARY
High: 70°F (21°C), Low: 57°F (14°C)
What Are Taiwan’s Winter Months?
Taiwan’s winter typically lasts from December to February. During this time, daytime temperatures range from the mid-60s°F (18-20°C) to high 50s F (15-16°C) at night.
Regional Differences
Northern Taiwan
Cooler and wetter. You’ll want layers and maybe a waterproof jacket.
Mountain Areas
Chilly, especially in the mornings. Pack a coat if you’re planning to hike.
Southern Taiwan
Warm and sunny, closer to 70s°F (21°C). A light jacket is often enough.

Taiwan winter holidays
New Year’s Day (January 1)
Kick off the year with a bang—literally—by catching the iconic Taipei 101 fireworks. If you’re planning to watch them, either arrive early to secure a spot or stay at a nearby hotel for a rooftop view.
Chinese New Year (end of January to beginning of February)
This is Taiwan’s biggest holiday and the Chinese New Year date is determined by the Lunar Calendar. During this period, stores may close early, so plan ahead!
It’s a time for family reunions, temple visits, and lots of food symbolism:
Fish = Abundance
Tangerines = Good fortune
Dumplings = Prosperity
Mustard Greens = Longevity
Don’t miss the Lantern Festival at the end of the celebration, where you can see stunning lanterns and enjoy tangyuan (glutinous rice balls).

FAQ
Whale in Love at the Love River in Kaohsiung
Q: Is it worth visiting Taiwan in the winter?
A: Absolutely! The weather is mild, perfect for sightseeing and enjoying hot springs. Just keep in mind that flights might be pricier around Chinese New Year.
Q: How cold does Taiwan get in the winter?
A: It’s not brutally cold. A leather jacket or light wool coat paired with a t-shirt or a long-sleeve usually does the trick. Coming from NYC winters, Taiwan’s chill feels like the perfect breeze.
Q: What should I avoid packing?
A: Skip the vapes, THC/CBD products, and meat — they’re not allowed. Bring only essentials!

final thoughts
Pier 2 Art Center in Kaohsiung
My favorite time to visit Taiwan is during the winter months, from December to February. The weather is enjoyable, and even though it can be hectic, it’s comforting to see everyone preparing to celebrate the traditional Chinese New Year with their families.
Although I haven’t been back for the Chinese New Year since 2020, these months are the best and coolest time to explore Taiwan.
You can download the Google Sheets packing list I created if you want a more concise one.
You can easily convert it into a PDF, print it out to check items off as you pack, or edit the Sheets directly. I included everything I could think of in the list.
I hope you found my post helpful! Happy packing!
