Chase Sapphire Preferred — is it worth it for travelers?

Since 2016, I’ve been using Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card since 2016 and highly recommend it to everyone who loves to travel and earn points. In this blog post, I will be discussing the benefits, rewards, and limitations of the Chase Sapphire card, as well as comparing it to other travel credit cards. So let’s get into it!

The Benefits of Chase Sapphire Preferred?

  • $0 Foreign transaction fee - which makes it an excellent card to use when traveling internationally!

  • $0 delivery fee when using Doordash - you can unlock $0 delivery fees and lower service fees on eligible orders for a minimum of one year when you activate by December 31, 2024

  • Earn 5x more points using Lyft rides - the only thing about this is that

  • Instacart subscription: You can have your groceries delivered to your doorstep with 6 months of complimentary Instacart+. Activate by July 31, 2024. Plus, Instacart+ members earn up to $15 in statement credits each quarter through July 2024.

  • Gopuff: You receive a $10 a month credit from Gopuff which delivers drinks, snacks, and other household essentials right to your door.

  • My Chase Plan: Eligible cardmembers can break up card purchases of $100 or more into fixed monthly payments with My Chase Plan®. With no interest, just a fixed monthly fee.

  • Earn up to $50 in statement credits each account anniversary year for hotel stays purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®

  • 5x total points on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card rewards program is very generous with several ways to earn points. You can earn up to $50 in statement credits each account anniversary year for hotel stays purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®. Additionally, you can earn 5x total points on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, excluding hotel purchases that qualify for the $50 Annual Ultimate Rewards Hotel Credit. You can also earn 2x on other travel purchases, 3x points on dining, including eligible delivery services, takeout and dining out, 3x points on online grocery purchases (excluding Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs), 3x points on select streaming services, and 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.

Ease of Redeeming Points

Redeeming points with Chase Sapphire Preferred is super easy. You can use your points towards a plane ticket, booking and finding a restaurant, and getting cash back. All you have to do is go into your rewards section in Chase, select the kind of reward you want, and follow the steps!

Is the Chase Sapphire Card's Annual Fee Worth It?

The Chase Sapphire Card comes with an annual fee of $95 and a variable APR of 20.74%–27.74%. While some may find the fee steep, it's worth the investment in the long run, especially when you’re looking for a beginner travel credit card. Chase Sapphire offers numerous benefits, including great customer service and a ton of perks.

Eligibility Requirements

To be approved for the Chase Sapphire Card, your credit score must be at least 670+. They also look into your annual income and your payment history.

Drawbacks + Limitations

While the Chase Sapphire Card comes with plenty of benefits, it does have some limitations. Unfortunately, it doesn't provide access to airport lounges, except for the Reserve card, which requires Priority Pass membership.

Although the Chase Sapphire card doesn't provide lounge access, it does come with several travel protections, including trip cancellation and delay reimbursement, travel accident insurance, loss baggage reimbursement, baggage delay insurance, travel emergency assistance, auto rental collision damage waiver, and roadside dispatch. The card also has excellent account security and protection, including 24/7 fraud monitoring and zero liability protection. Speaking from experience with fraud, the customer service on Chase is impeccable and not to mention, efficient.
