While the THSR offers a more luxurious Business Class experience, this guide dives deep into the Standard Class, which is a perfect option for budget-conscious travelers who still prioritize comfort and efficiency. Here, I’ll cover everything you need to know about riding in Standard Class, from booking your ticket to what to expect onboard.

Standard Class overview

SEATING
Standard Class on the THSR has a comfortable 2-3 seating configuration. This means plenty of legroom and a feeling of spaciousness for a relaxing journey. The plush blue seats are semi-adjustable for added comfort, and each seat features a handy garment hanger by the window and a fold-down tray table perfect for enjoying snacks or drinks on the go. (Friendly reminder: Always dispose of your trash responsibly in the designated trash bins onboard.)

AMBIANCE
The atmosphere in Standard Class is generally quiet and family-friendly. This creates a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience for everyone onboard.

LUGGAGE STORAGE
Overhead compartments provide a ton of space for carry-on luggage, backpacks, or duffel bags. Additionally, there are designated luggage areas at the front and back of each car offering extra storage options in case your luggage is too heavy. During peak travel times, these luggage areas can fill up quickly, so consider keeping your carry-on with you if you’re traveling during holidays or busy weekends.

booking your Standard Class ticket

Booking your Standard Class ticket is super easy! Here are four convenient options available:

OFFICIAL THSR WEBSITE
You can purchase your tickets online. There are Chinese and English options available.

KLOOK
Klook often has great discounts for booking ticket prices. You can even reserve your seats on Klook! I recommend purchasing on Klook, especially for non-Taiwanese residents, traveling for a short period of time in Taiwan.

TICKET BOOTHS
Purchase your tickets in person at any train station through authorized ticketing agents. Many offer English language assistance.

TICKET VENDING MACHINES
For added convenience, using the vending machines is a seamless process for purchasing your ticket. It also comes in English options.

Finding the Best Fare

Ticket prices for Standard Class vary depending on a few factors:

• TRAVEL DISTANCE
  The farther you travel, the higher the fare.

• EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT
  For Standard Seating only! Take advantage of Early Bird discounts offered by THSR. These discounts can be significant (up to 35% off) but sell out quickly, so plan ahead!

Additional Ticketing Options

• CHILDREN DISCOUNTS
  Children under 6 years old travel for free if they don't require a seat. Children under 12 can receive a 50% discount with proof of age and height (limited to 2 children per adult at the discounted rate).

  Passengers over 65 years old can also enjoy 50% discounted fares with a valid ID proving their age.

The boarding process for Standard Class is very efficient.

ASSIGNED SEATING
If you purchased a Standard Class ticket with assigned seating, your car number and seat number will be displayed on your ticket. Simply locate your designated car and enjoy your comfortable pre-assigned seat.

FIRST-COME, FIRST SERVE
If you purchased a Standard Class ticket without assigned seating, boarding is first-come, first-served at your assigned car number.

TIP: To have a smooth boarding experience, I recommend arriving at the station 30-50 minutes before your scheduled departure time. The THSR operates with exceptional punctuality, so arriving early allows you to navigate the station, locate your platform, and board comfortably.

Onboard Amenities

• RESTROOM
  Restrooms are conveniently located in all odd-numbered carriages. Make sure to flush before leaving and not dispose of anything in the toilet other than toilet paper.

• VENDING MACHINE
  Select trains feature vending machines stocked with a variety of snacks and drinks to satisfy any cravings.

• FREE WI-FI
  Stay connected throughout your journey with complimentary Wi-Fi access onboard.

• TROLLEYS
  Don't worry if you forgot to pack lunch or dinner! A food trolley service operates all the trains, offering convenient meal and snack options for purchase.

Entertainment

While there are no individual in-seat entertainment systems in THRS, you can bring your own entertainment. Here are some options:

  Especially during peak seasons and holidays like Chinese New Year, 228 Memorial Day (also known as Peace Memorial Day), tickets tend to sell out quickly. Secure your spot by booking tickets in advance. Consider using platforms like Klook which often offer discounted fares, especially for non-Taiwanese residents who aren’t staying in Taiwan for too long.

• DOWNLOAD THE THSR APP
  This handy app provides real-time information on train schedules, platform numbers, and potential delays. It can also store your tickets electronically and may even offer mobile boarding in the future (check the app's information for details).

ARRIVE EARLY
Punctuality is essential on the THSR. Aim to arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before your departure time. This allows you enough time to navigate the station, locate your platform, and board the train comfortably. Remember, the THSR operates on a strict schedule and departs promptly!

PACK LIGHT
While overhead compartments and designated luggage areas are available, consider packing light for easier maneuverability on the train. This will also make boarding and leaving the train a breeze.
