Once a busy gold mining town during the Qing Dynasty, this mountain village is now famous for its narrow alleyways, stunning views, and incredible teahouses.
When visiting Jiufen, the Jiufen Teahouse is an absolute must-visit. Known as the “OG” teahouse of the village, it was the very first one established here and continues to set the gold standard for tea culture in Jiufen. What’s even better is that it has some of the best views!

about Jiufen Teahouse
Opened in 1991, Jiufen Teahouse was the first teahouse in Jiufen, playing a key role in introducing tea culture to this historic mining town. As the popularity of Jiufen grew, more teahouses opened, each competing to offer something unique. There are over two dozen teahouses today, but Jiufen Teahouse remains extraordinary for its rich history and artistic appeal.

The teahouse is housed in a 100-year-old residence originally owned by Wong Shan-Ying (翁山英), a respected mining director and prominent figure during Jiufen’s gold rush era. The home was carefully preserved and transformed by the current owner, Hong Chi-Sheng (洪志勝), who brought his artistic vision to life by merging history, tea culture, and art.
Hong first visited Jiufen in 1979 with his painting instructor and was captivated by the town’s stunning natural beauty. After nine years of hard work to establish himself, he returned to Jiufen, purchased Wong Shan-Ying’s historic residence, and began the transformation.
The renovation preserved the home’s original stonewashed walls, wooden staircases, and traditional Taiwanese architecture while adding thoughtful artistic touches. Hong infused the space with his concept of “Tea 茶, Pottery 陶, Art 畫,” which seamlessly blends Jiufen’s cultural origin with an artistic flair.

checkout area
From the moment you walk through Jiufen Teahouse’s doors, you’ll feel like you’re transported back in time in a traditional tearoom. Imagine seeing rustic wooden furniture, stonewashed walls, and rows of black teapots bubbling away on a stovetop. The aesthetic seamlessly blends old-world allure with elegance.
You can sit either indoors or outdoors: Indoors, you’ll find cozy seating surrounded by historical decor, while the outdoor terrace (on sunnier days) offers breathtaking mountain views. If you head downstairs, you’ll discover a gift shop filled with handmade pottery, teapots, postcards, and even a koi pond.
If you need to use the bathroom, they have a traditional outdoor setup with two stalls — one for sitting and one for squatting (a classic Taiwanese-style toilet).

tea experience
Jiufen Teahouse offers an impressive menu of teas, snacks, and desserts. If you’re unsure what to order (like us because there were just too many options 😂), the staff (fluent in English, Mandarin, Japanese, and Taiwanese) will happily guide you.
Here’s what we ordered:
Dayuling Oolong Tea (大禹嶺烏龍): A must-try for tea lovers.
Homemade Oolong Cookies (自製手工烏龍餅乾): Light, buttery cookies that pair perfectly with tea
Taiwanese Turtle-Shaped Cake: Brown Sugar Tieguanyin (漢餅): A rich and not-too-sweet dessert
Grapefruit Oolong & Osmanthus Black Tea Dark Chocolate: A very rich dark chocolately surprise!
The tea-drinking process here is an art form. When your tea arrives, the staff explains how to brew it to perfection. Brewing times are key — for example, the first steep might take 55 seconds, the second just 5 seconds, and subsequent steeps increasing slightly. Each tea can be steeped 5 – 6 times, letting you enjoy every sip before the leaves are discarded. Throughout this process, the staff will check your waterpot and make sure to replenish it so you can focus on enjoying the experience!
🫖 PRO TIP
Be cautious when bringing kids —
those teapots are super hot!
If you’re heat-sensitive (like me), using long sleeves or a napkin can help when pouring tea.
Once you’re done, any leftover tea leaves are thoughtfully packed in a cute brown bag, complete with a hand-drawn illustration of a woman with a traditional tea set. Such a lovely memento!
As a bonus, you’ll also receive an envelope containing:
A hand-drawn map of Jiufen.
A short history of Jiufen Teahouse.
A product pamphlet with pricing.
Two charming postcards to keep or send to friends.

final thoughts
I loved our visit to Jiufen Teahouse! It was truly an experience, and I appreciated how they walked us through the tea-making process. If you have a terrible memory like mine, don’t worry — they provide a card to guide you!
The staff spoke several languages, including Japanese, English, Mandarin, and Taiwanese. I overheard one of the ladies speaking fluent Japanese to a customer, and I couldn’t help but compliment her on her skills!
I highly recommend Jiufen Teahouse to anyone visiting Jiufen.
The tea and traditional desserts are delicious and not too sweet, and the service is amazing! I wish we could have sat outside for the views, but it was raining, and clouds and fog obscured everything.
I will definitely be back next time I’m in Jiufen. ( ⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝)
