【東里流芳 巷子料理】Sean’s Restaurant in Chiayi, Taiwan
When my partner, Gabriel, and I were on our way to Alishan, we stayed in Chiayi City. Looking back to our time in New York before leaving for Taiwan, Gabriel discovered a literal hidden gem called Sean’s Restaurant (東里流芳 巷子料理), which received numerous fantastic reviews from both locals and tourists.
Since it's a small business, I’ll share some tips on how to make a reservation, find the menu, and provide some insight about Sean’s. Let’s get started!

about Sean’s Restaurant
Sean's Restaurant is a cozy, independently owned business.
Sean personally prepares and cooks all the meals, so the menu changes seasonally based on fresh ingredients. To view his latest menu (in Chinese) is on his Facebook page.

food highlights
Gabriel and I had an amazing meal at Sean's.
We each ordered a different glass of wine to complement our dishes. Gabriel chose red wine to accompany his red meat, while I chose white wine to pair with my seafood.
The online menu featured suggestions from Sean on which type of wine to match with each entrée, which made our decision much easier.
Choosing a favorite dish is hard, but I think mine was the scallop salad. The salad was fresh and crisp, and the scallops were perfectly cooked with incredible flavor.
I also enjoyed my creamy jumbo shrimp pasta as my main course, and we both loved the tiramisu for dessert.
Everything was prepared beautifully and tasted so flavorful! Just writing about it now is making my mouth water. 🤭

final thoughts
Sean's Restaurant feels like stepping into a friend's home you haven't visited in a while.
The decor features a vintage touch with Christmas accents, and there's even a resident cat — a former stray that Sean adopted — who might greet you during your meal.
The seating options are varied, including a large round table for big groups and smaller, more intimate tables for couples.
Sean himself is incredibly friendly and attentive. He personally greets guests, shows them to their seats, and prepares their meals, which they are ordered in advance through Facebook Messenger.
After dinner, we chatted with him about his restaurant, and he shared that people from all over the world, including Singapore and the UK, come to enjoy his food.
Supporting this small business, run by someone so passionate about creating delicious meals and memorable experiences, made us feel truly special to be there.

plan your visit
Sean's Restaurant offers fantastic food at reasonable prices, especially considering the personalized service and high-quality ingredients. While it is a bit pricier than typical street food or other small family restaurants, the quality justifies the cost.
There is no dress code, but reservations are essential.
You can book a table online through his Facebook page by sending a message and pre-ordering your meals in advance. Sean prefers to prepare everything fresh, so pre-ordering is crucial.
You can also message him on Facebook to ask about the menu or if you have any dietary restrictions. Currently, the menu is only available in Chinese, but you can use the Google Translate camera to translate it.
