【東里流芳 巷子料理】Sean’s Restaurant in Chiayi, Taiwan

Melinda enjoying white wine at table with Gabe and delicious scallop salad at Sean's. Cozy atmosphere in Chiayi's hidden gem.

When my boyfriend Gabriel and I were on our way to Alishan, we stayed in Chiayi City. Rewinding back to when we were still in New York before leaving for Taiwan, Gabriel found a hidden gem called Sean’s Restaurant (東里流芳 巷子料理) with lots of amazing reviews from locals and tourists. Since it's a small business, I'll share some tips on how to make a reservation, find the menu, and dive in a bit about Sean’s. Let’s get started!

local flavors with a personal touch

Sean's Restaurant is a cute, solo-owned business. Sean himself prepares and cooks all the meals himself, so the menu changes seasonally based on fresh ingredients. You can find the latest menu (in Chinese) on his Facebook page.

memorable dishes

Fresh scallop salad at Sean's Restaurant, Chiayi.

Gabriel and I had an amazing meal at Sean's. We ordered two different glasses of wine to pair with our meals. Since Gabriel had red meat and I had seafood, he had red wine and I had white. The menu had suggestions from Sean on which type of wine to pair with each entree, making it easy for us to choose.

It's super hard to pick our favorite dishes, but I think mine was the scallop salad. The salad was fresh and crisp, and the scallop was perfectly cooked with so much great flavor. I also enjoyed my creamy jumbo shrimp pasta as my main entree, and we loved the tiramisu dessert. Everything was prepared amazingly and tasted so flavorful!

warm hospitality in a cozy setting

Intimate dining area at Sean's Restaurant, Chiayi. Unique vintage and Christmas decor.

Sean's Restaurant feels like stepping into a friend's home that you haven’t visited in a while. The decor has a touch of vintage with Christmas accents, and there's even a resident cat (a former stray that Sean adopted himself) who might say hi to you during your meal. The seating is varied, with a large round table for big groups and smaller, more intimate areas dining tables for couples.

Sean himself is incredibly friendly and super attentive. He greets guests, takes you to your seat, and whips up your meal that you previously ordered through Facebook Messenger in the kitchen. After dinner, we chatted with him about his restaurant, and he shared how people from all over the world, including Singapore, the UK, and others, have come to enjoy his food. Supporting this small business run by someone so passionate about creating delicious meals and memorable experiences made us feel super special to even be there.

plan your visit

Sean's Restaurant offers fantastic food at a reasonable price, considering the personalized service and high-quality ingredients. It's a bit pricier than typical street food or other small family restaurants, but the quality justifies the cost.

There's no dress code, but reservations are a must. You can book online through his Facebook page by messaging and pre-order your meals in advance. Sean likes to prepare everything fresh, so pre-ordering is essential. You can also message him on Facebook to inquire about the menu or if you have any dietary restrictions. The menu is currently only in Chinese, but you can use Google Translate camera to translate the language.
