【台中 漁人町日本星光市集】FISHERMAn TOWN in Taichung, Taiwan
While chatting with my Taichung-based hairstylist, Jayer, we got into a discussion about local hidden gems — places locals love but don’t always show up on the usual Google searches. That’s when he recommended FISHERMAn TOWN (漁人町日本星光市集), a Japanese-style festival night market right next to the Taichung Fish Market. The photos he showed me instantly caught my attention, but I didn’t get a chance to visit that year. Fast forward to the year after — I finally made it with my partner before heading to Vietnam, and let me tell you, this place is definitely worth checking out.
FISHERMAn TOWN blends the lively energy of a traditional Japanese matsuri (festival) with a Taiwanese night market twist. Think colorful stalls, festival games, an indoor-outdoor eating area, and even live music on certain nights. It’s also dog-friendly (yes, I saw people pushing their pups in strollers), and they even have vegan-friendly food options!
So, what can you expect?
I’ll walk you through what FISHERMAn TOWN is all about, how to get there, what to do, and some tips to make the most of your visit.

about FISHERMAn TOWN
FISHERMAn TOWN is not your typical night market — it blends the lively energy of a Taiwanese night market with the vibrant charm of a Japanese festival. Picture rows of brightly lit stalls, eye-catching signage, and a mix of food, games, and unique shopping finds.
Located in the Nantun District, right next to the Taichung Fish Market, this spot is one-of-a-kind in Taichung. Whether you're craving Japanese, Taiwanese, Singaporean, or more street food flavors, looking for quirky souvenirs, or just want to enjoy a fun, chill night out, this place delivers.
The market has an indoor-outdoor feel, where you can grab food and sit outside, then wander through the stalls. There’s a section for festival-style games and another for shopping, adding to the immersive experience.
Even though it was quieter than I expected when we visited, I loved the atmosphere and hope more people discover it!

stepping "inside"
Walking into FISHRMAn TOWN felt even more vibrant and exciting than the photos. The entire space is brightly lit with colorful stalls, Japanese lanterns, and playful signage.
The market is split into two sections:
The indoor-”outdoor” area with food stalls and open seating
The indoor section features games, cute little shopping booths, and a stage for live performances.
While we were there, it wasn’t crowded at all, which was surprising since locals mentioned it was packed when it first opened. I think it’s one of Taichung’s underrated gems, and I hope more people get to experience it!
Also, if you have a dog, bring them along! I saw multiple people pushing pet strollers and walking their pups around comfortably.

food + drink highlights
While I didn’t take too many of our food photos (because I was too busy enjoying the experience), here are some must-try eats that I actually took photos of:
Fishcake skewers with soup
An assortment of fish skewers you can choose from with veggies on skewers as well in soup, perfect for days that are much cooler! 🍢
Grilled skewers
I had grilled mushroom skewers, and my partner had grilled chicken.
We loved them so much that we went back for seconds!
Milk tea at DAITEA
Because no Taiwanese market is complete without boba drink in your hand! 🧋

shopping + games
When you head inside the indoor section, there’s a mix of shopping stalls on one side and a variety of game booths on the other.
Shopping
While we didn’t really do much shopping, we quickly glanced at the stalls while walking by, which sold everything from traditional Japanese-style clothing to cute trinkets and plush toys. If you’re looking for unique souvenirs or gifts, there are plenty of fun finds here.
Games
Now, this is where we spent most of our time. The game booths had a variety of classic festival-style challenges.
We played one where you had to roll a golf ball into the holes in a straight line to win tickets — it looked easy but was surprisingly tricky! The more tickets you collect, the better the prize you can redeem at the front or the side. It added a fun, nostalgic element to the visit!

final thoughts
FISHERMAn TOWN is a great spot for couples, friend groups, and families looking for a casual and fun night out. Whether you’re there for the food, the games, or just to soak in the festival atmosphere, there’s something for everyone.
There’s really no “best” time to visit since it’s not very crowded, so you can go anytime they’re open and have a great experience. I definitely want to come back and try their desserts next time.
If you love unique night markets, this one should be on your list of places to visit when you’re in Taichung!
