Mollusca: a memorable happy hour experience in Meatpacking District

Exterior entrance of Mollusca restaurant in the vibrant Meatpacking District of NYC

I've passed by Mollusca a few times while hanging out with my friends in the Meatpacking District, but it never really caught my eye from the outside. However, when my friend, Virna, suggested meeting up for happy hour there, I was intrigued when I checked out their menu from online and I was instantly sold. She raved about Mollusca with it’s super fresh seafood offerings and tasty drinks. Little did I realize that the place I had casually passed by was the very same spot that we were meeting up at. With its seafood delights and me being a pescatarian, I was eager to discover the taste sensations that awaited me!

ambiance & decor

Stepping into Mollusca, I was absolutely mesmerized by the stunning interior decor. It was a complete transformation from what I had perceived from the outside. Just like the saying goes, "don't judge a book by its cover." The moment we entered, we was greeted by a spacious and exquisitely designed dining space. The chairs, tables, and seating were all well arranged with space, and the dimmed lighting created an intimate and cozy ambiance. This was the type of place I love for amazing dining experiences.

In my experience, when a restaurant puts effort into every aspect of their decor, it often translates to the quality of their culinary creations. It's a sign that attention to detail is a top priority.

Arriving for our happy hour reservation, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant wasn't crowded. (Which we did go there right at 5 PM) Virna also mentioned that when she visits it’s also normally like this for her as well, which I appreciated. I dislike dining in overly crowded places where you have to raise your voice to be heard. It can make the whole experience uncomfortable. Anyway, we were seated at a table near the windows, allowing us to peek outside and people watch as they go by.

mouthwatering goods

While browsing the happy hour menu, we decided to order a few delectable delights. From the happy hour selection, we ordered the Fried Goat Cheese Plate ($13), while also ordering from the dinner menu, the Double Tartare ($53), that Virna highly recommended for us to share. For drinks, I ordered the refreshing Tropical Rain Cocktail (happy hour pricing uncertain) and Virna chose a Rosé (happy hour pricing uncertain).

It's worth noting that the online menu differs slightly from the in-restaurant offerings. Mollusca seems to have more happy hour options available in the restaurant. (Maybe due to a delay in updating their online menu?) Additionally, the posted happy hour times online were different from the actual opening hours, which led to a minor confusion during our reservation process. I made online reservations for 2 at 4:00 PM because those hours were available, but the restaurant wasn’t open until 5 so Virna and I met up at 5 instead. The happy hour times are from 5 - 6 PM, not 4 - 6 PM that’s shown online.

When our drinks and dishes arrived, they were stunningly plated. Each plate was beautifully presented, enticing us to indulge. The Fried Goat Cheese Plate exceeded my expectations, delivering a sweet and creamy flavors left me craving more. The Double Tartare, served in a generous portion, was a true showstopper. Its creamy texture and the burst of flavors from the caviar and the tuna and salmon melded harmoniously. Served with large rice chips provided for dipping, each bite was a melt-in-your-mouth sensation. As for my Tropical Rain Cocktail was so good! With tropical flavors and just the right amount of sweetness, it transported me to a summertime paradise. I had to order another round of it because it was too good.

My recommendation would undoubtedly be the Double Tartare. This dish is a true masterpiece — fresh, creamy goodness, and the perfect balance of flavors. The addition of caviar elevates the experience, and when paired with the generously portioned rice chips, it creates a culinary symphony that lingers on your palate. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water and I'm already tempted to order one right this moment!

service

During our visit, we were greeted by incredibly friendly staffs at Mollusca NYC. They went above and beyond to ensure we felt welcome and comfortable. Even though Mollusca was not overly busy at that time, their attentiveness and genuine friendliness stood out to me. They had the perfect balance between being attentive to our needs, like refilling our water glasses, while also giving us the space to enjoy our conversation and the dining experience. And that, is what I love when I’m dining at a restaurant.

When it comes to choosing cocktails, I'm always on the lookout for something sweet and doesn’t taste like alcohol. I shared my preference with our waiter, and he recommended the Tropical Rain cocktail. And let me tell you, this cocktail was spot on! This delightful concoction was a perfect blend of tropical flavors with a touch of sweetness. It truly captured the essence of summer in a glass. Trust me, if you have a sweet tooth, this cocktail is a must-try!
