Imagine hiking in Alishan to a breathtaking sunrise, with a sea of fluffy clouds stretching below, as the golden light bathes the ancient cypress trees. Alishan National Forest offers stunning scenery, historic railways, and unforgettable hikes.

However, planning a trip to Alishan can be overwhelming for first-time visitors, especially when there is too little or too much information.

Getting to Alishan without a car is probably the most challenging part, especially for a visitor who is not from Taiwan. Still, it’s also fun because part of the adventure is going to Alishan.

Recently, I explored Alishan, and although we didn't get to visit every trail, I learned a lot! So, within this guide, I’ll walk you through some of the different ways to get there, what to check out, and where to stay.

getting to Alishan

Alishan's accessibility depends on your starting point and preferred travel style.
Here's an overview of the options:

— From Major Cities —

High-speed train (HSR) in Taiwan, a convenient transportation option for reaching Alishan.

High Speed Rail (HSR)

If you’re traveling from a distant city like Taipei or Kaohsiung, taking the HSR to Chiayi HSR Station is the most convenient option.

Once you arrive at Chiayi HSR Station, you can continue your journey by either hopping on a bus or boarding the traditional Alishan Railway to head up into the mountains.

From there, you can take a separate train ride up to Alishan via the Forest Railway from a separate platform located at Chiayi Train Station. Alternatively, you can buy bus tickets to travel up the Alishan mountains.

Renting a car or taking a taxi provides flexibility but can be more expensive. The drive takes roughly 2-3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
