getting there

Water Taxi

This is the most common and convenient way to reach Culebrita from Culebra.

Several water taxi companies operate between the islands, offering a scenic and comfortable ride. Many services, like Gammy's Water Tours (which is what we’ve booked!), even include beach chairs, umbrellas, and sometimes snorkeling gear in their packages.

TIP: Reserve your water taxi ride in advance, especially during peak season.

Boat (experienced captains only)

For experienced boaters, renting a boat from Culebra offers the freedom to explore Culebrita at your own pace. Remember, navigating unfamiliar waters requires caution and experience. Always prioritize safety and check weather conditions before setting off.

what to pack

Culebrita is a gorgeous natural destination, but it has no amenities. It's important to plan and pack accordingly. Keep in mind that there are no public restrooms on the island, so make sure to use the facilities before departing Culebra.

Although Culebrita is a small island, there’s so much to do!

Here are some must-visit spots to add to your itinerary:

Culebrita Lighthouse

Faro Culebrita

The Faro Culebrita, also known as the Culebrita Lighthouse, was built by the Spanish in 1886, is a historical landmark that once guided ships through the Caribbean.

To get to the lighthouse, you will have to hike about a mile up the hill — so make sure to wear sneakers. Watch out for hermit crabs along the way, and protect yourself from the sun and mosquitoes with sunscreen and repellent.

Be aware of the hornets when exploring the lighthouse. There was a huge hornet’s nest in one of the sections with hornets buzzing around when we were exploring the lighthouse.

Bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and mosquito spray when visiting the lighthouse.

Playa Tortuga
(Turtle Beach)

Playa Tortuga is a nesting ground for sea turtles.

Please keep your eyes peeled for these magnificent creatures as they grace the shores (be mindful of maintaining a safe distance).

Piscinas Naturales (The Baths)

Piscinas Naturales "The Baths" are natural tidal pools where waves create a "bath-like" feature for relaxation. Sea creatures can sometimes be found here!

South Beach

Not too popular and is another great destination to snorkel!

Treasure Beach

Also known as Trash Beach, is located on the east side of the island. Although its name is deterring for some, avid beachcombers may find it appealing. The beach was named Trash Beach because the winds and currents often wash up trash onto the shores. However, the beach was later renamed Treasure Beach due to its unique appeal.

Remember, Culebrita is a remote island with no amenities. There are no shops, restaurants, or public restrooms available

WHAT TO WEAR

Since water taxis don't dock directly on the beach, wearing your swimsuit underneath your clothes will be convenient for a quick and refreshing transition when you arrive.

WHAT TO BRING

Sunscreen (reef-safe, please!), a hat, comfortable shoes for hiking, and beach sandals are all essentials.

Snacks and a reusable water bottle — fill it up before you leave to minimize waste.

A trash bag is crucial for packing out all your waste and keeping the island pristine. Also, pack mosquito spray if you're prone to bites.
