In the serene shores of Culebra, Puerto Rico, where Gabriel and I stayed at Aleli Cottages during my birthday getaway. Located in the captivating beauty of the Caribbean, Aleli Cottages was the perfect escape from New York City (where we’re from hehe).
On the beautiful small island of Culebra, Aleli Cottages has an appealing charm, reminding me of an intimate Airbnb experience I’ve had before rather than a traditional hotel stay. With breathtaking ocean views from the terrace, each moment spent at the cottage felt like an amazing retreat, allowing us to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of our surroundings.

Location & Accessibility
Located in Culebra, Aleli Cottages is the perfect getaway away from the touristy areas. Situated at the top of the hill, the cottages boast panoramic views of the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea, providing the perfect setting for relaxation and tranquility.
Accessing Aleli Cottages requires a bit of planning, as the cottages are not easily accessible by foot. When arriving in Culebra, whether by ferry from Fajardo or flights from San Juan, my best advice is to rent a vehicle to reach the cottages. While some visitors go for a golf cart, navigating the steep hills and rugged terrain may be more comfortable with a sturdy Jeep.
When you start heading to Aleli Cottages with your rented cart or Jeep, take your time to enjoy the scenic drive, but be mindful of the challenging road conditions. Keep a lookout for potholes and drive cautiously to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Accommodation Overview
At Aleli Cottages, you have a variety of options to choose from, each offering a unique experience tailored to your preferences.
During our stay, Gabriel and I booked the Pitirre cottage, which is hidden amongst lush greenery on the left side when you drive up the hill. While it took us a moment to find it — since it was tucked away on a gentle downhill slope — the secluded setting provided a sense of privacy and serenity.
The Pitirre cottage has essential amenities for a comfortable stay. The cozy wooden interior features a mini kitchen equipped with a fridge and cooking essentials, perfect for preparing light meals. Additionally, the cottage includes basic bath amenities, such as towels, toiletries, an outdoor shower, and even beach gear like chairs and towels for beach adventures.
For those who need refreshing cool air away from the Caribbean sun, the cottage offers both air conditioning and fans to ensure a cool and pleasant atmosphere indoors. However, we did encounter a minor inconvenience with mosquito intrusion due to the small holes in the window screens. Make sure to bring mosquito spray and spray yourself at all times!
My favorite part of our cottage experience was the spacious terrace with a hammock, inviting us to unwind and soak in the breathtaking views. Whether you decide to lounge in the hammock or enjoy a meal in the outdoor seating area, the terrace provides the perfect vantage point for witnessing stunning sunsets and sunrises over the horizon.
Even though Aleli Cottages has mentioned no pets allowed — we did have a friendly peacock who came to visit us every morning around 8:30 - 8:40 to say good morning. We also had our natural alarm clock from the wild chickens clucking around the island telling us to wake up and watch the sunrise.
TIP: While Wi-Fi is available at Aleli Cottages, I do recommend you have a reliable internet connection, as the signal strength may vary. I ended up just using my hotspot and internet because I couldn’t connect to the wifi unless we were standing in the kitchen.

Facilities & Services
While Aleli Cottages may not have the most extravagant facilities like swimming pools or dining options, its simplicity is part of its charm. The property offers a communal kitchen area — which we didn’t use because we decided to explore local dining options during our stay.
There is free on-site parking available for guests. We ended up just parking our Jeep in front of our cottage, and didn’t have to worry about finding parking!
What makes Aleli Cottages unique is its dedication to eco-friendliness and sustainability. The cottages are constructed using natural materials, seamlessly blending into the surrounding environment. This commitment to preserving the natural beauty of Culebra is commendable and aligns with our values as consciously mindful travelers.
