Taiwan’s big cities are known for their bright energy — but Taichung is one of those places that quietly wins you over.
After years of living in Kaohsiung (高雄), my parents made Taichung their new home a couple of years ago — and honestly, I didn’t fully get it until I visited myself. Online, Taichung didn’t get all the buzz and seemed mundane, but in reality, it has a charm that’s hard to explain and even harder to forget.
After spending time here post-COVID and seeing how much the city has evolved over the years, I completely fell for it. From boba culture and hot springs to nature escapes and everyday convenience, Taichung offers a lifestyle that just works.
Here are 6 reasons why Taichung deserves a spot on your Taiwan itinerary.
1️⃣ Taichung is the birthplace of boba
Did you know that Taichung is where boba was born? Chun Shui Tang, the original creator of milk tea, started it all here — and the city has been perfecting boba ever since.
Beyond the OG, Taichung is home to standout tea shops you shouldn’t miss, such as Chicha San Chen, known for its high-quality tea leaves and perfectly balanced flavors. If you care about your boba being actually good, this city delivers.
2️⃣ luxury hot springs without the crowds
This one surprised me too: Taichung has some of the best hot springs in Taiwan, and they’re wildly underrated.
The spring water here is 100% natural and known for its skin-purifying qualities — you’ll genuinely feel softer and more refreshed after soaking. Guguan, tucked into Taichung’s mountain region, is the star of the show. It’s peaceful, scenic, and far less crowded than the hot spring areas near Taipei.
I almost want to gatekeep this… but it’s too good not to share.
3️⃣ the perfect mix of city + nature
Taichung hits the perfect spot. Summers are hot but not overly oppressive, and winters are mild enough that a light jacket usually suffices. Compared to Taipei’s humidity or Kaohsiung’s heat, Taichung just feels… a bit easier on your body.
That comfort makes exploring more enjoyable — whether you’re walking around the city, hopping on a bike, or heading into the mountains for fresh air and views.
4️⃣ the middle ground to Sun Moon Lake, Alishan & beyond
One of Taichung’s biggest advantages? Location.
From the city, it’s incredibly easy to escape into nature. Want lakeside views? Sun Moon Lake in Nantou is a short trip away. Planning a misty mountain hiking adventure? Alishan in Chiayi is totally doable from here.
Because Taichung sits right in the center of Taiwan, it works beautifully as a home base — you can explore multiple regions without constantly changing hotels. If you’re planning to stay a few nights, choosing the right area matters — here’s my guide to the best places to stay in Taichung depending on what kind of trip you’re planning.
5️⃣ everything is convenient
Taichung is all about convenience, making it super easy for everyone to get around, do their errands, save time, and just have a great time.
For transportation, you’ve got access to:
You can explore the city comfortably without renting a car — and honestly, you won’t miss having one.
Forgot something? Need a quick snack? Want to pay a bill or grab a coffee? FamilyMart and 7-Eleven are everywhere, making everyday errands ridiculously easy.
This is one of those things you don’t fully appreciate until you’re here.
6️⃣ the rich history 🕰️
Taichung does an amazing job of preserving history while giving it new life.
A perfect example is Miyahara (宮原眼科). Built in 1927, it was once a Japanese-owned eye clinic. Today, it’s been beautifully transformed into one of Taichung’s most iconic landmarks.
Inside, you’ll find dramatic architecture, some of the best ice cream in the city, and a cozy café upstairs that’s perfect for lunch or afternoon tea. It’s a must-visit — whether you’re into history, food, or just beautiful spaces.
