Fire Island Lighthouse

Scenic walkway leading towards the Fire Island Lighthouse, a historic landmark on Long Island.

Towering at 168 feet, this lighthouse is not only the tallest on Long Island but also has a rich history of guiding ships safely past treacherous shores.

I’ve had Fire Island’s lighthouse on my Fire Island Bucket List for quite some time and was super excited to learn more about its history. Little did I know, the climb up the lighthouse wasn’t just about the view, but a journey through time.

Brief History

Fire Island Lighthouse offering panoramic views of Fire Island.

The first original lighthouse was originally a 74-foot-tall lighthouse and was made of cream-colored Connecticut River blue split stone. It guarded the dangerous shores, but it was too short to guide ships clear of danger. So, it was dismantled, and its stones were used to build the current lighthouse that stands tall at 168 feet.

The current lighthouse standing now was built in 1858 and was equipped with a first-order Fresnel lens that emitted a powerful white flash every minute. It was powered by whale oil, kerosene, and later electricity in 1938.

Despite its crucial role for over a century, the Fire Island Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1973. But, thanks to a group of dedicated citizens who stepped in to save the lighthouse, it was preserved and is still in operation today!
