Fire Island Lighthouse in New York
Towering at 168 feet, this lighthouse is not only the tallest on Long Island but also has a rich history of guiding ships safely past treacherous shores.
I’ve had Fire Island’s lighthouse on my Fire Island Bucket List for quite some time and was super excited to learn more about its history. Little did I know, the climb up the lighthouse wasn’t just about the view, but a journey through time.

brief history
The first original lighthouse was a 74-foot-tall structure made of cream-colored Connecticut River blue split stone. Although it provided some protection along the dangerous shores, its height was insufficient to effectively guide ships away from danger.
As a result, it was dismantled, and its stones were repurposed to construct the current lighthouse — the one we see today — which stands at an impressive 168 feet.
Built-in 1858, the current lighthouse features a first-order Fresnel lens that emits a powerful white flash every minute. Initially powered by whale oil, it later transitioned to kerosene and, in 1938, to electricity.
Despite its vital role for over a century, the Fire Island Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1973. Fortunately, a group of dedicated citizens intervened to save the lighthouse, guaranteeing its preservation, and it remains operational to this day!
