Taiwan's busy cities are well-known for their lively energy, but hidden beyond the bright lights is a true gem: Taichung. This city, which has become my parentsโ€™ new home after years in Kaohsiung (้ซ˜้›„), took me by complete surprise. Even though I  found mostly generic tourist destinations in online searches, Taichung seemed to have this charm that captivated me the moment I arrived. Three years away from Taiwan due to the COVID lockdowns had shown me a country in transformation, and Taichung perfectly embodied that.

Now, having fallen head-over-heels for this city, I want to share the five reasons why you should also consider visiting Taichung!

#1: everything is convenient

Taichung is all about convenience, making it super easy for everyone to get around, do their errands, save time, and just have a great time.

Convenient transportation options

Whether you're a regular traveler or it's your first time visiting, youโ€™ll love the awesome public transportation system Taiwan has!

The High Speed Rail (HSR), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), buses, and YouBikes are amazing ways to get around and explore Taichung without even needing a car.

Convenience stores

Plus, for those everyday must-haves โ€” like a quick snack, a forgotten face mask, or paying a utility bill โ€“ you'll find handy convenience stores like FamilyMart and 7-Eleven practically everywhere, so you're never too far from whatever you need.

#2: the rich history ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ

Taichung is all about blending the old and the new seamlessly.

If you're into history, you'll love exploring the city and checking out architectural gems like Miyahara, which has a fascinating past. This building used to be a Japanese-owned eye clinic back in 1927, but it's been beautifully transformed.

Nowadays, it's a must-visit spot with stunning architecture, delicious ice cream, and a cozy cafรฉ upstairs that's perfect for grabbing lunch or enjoying afternoon tea.

#3: thereโ€™s always something to do

I had no idea how much there was to do in Taichung. There are museums, shopping areas, and bookstores โ€” and did I mention thereโ€™s so much to do?

Get your nails done at Nail Nail ๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿผ

I always make sure to get my nails done in Taiwan because they do such a fantastic job, and the styles are always so innovative.

During my visit to Taichung, I visited Nail Nail, a nail salon that I've been to twice now. Each time, they did an excellent job and I just loved my experience there. My favorite design I got looked like water droplets stuck to my nails!

#4: the architecture

The architecture in Taichung has a ton of different styles, ranging from modern skyscrapers to beautifully preserved historical buildings.

I even passed by a cute elementary school that had a castle-like shape on the exterior, adding a playful element for children! Just imagine the joy of attending a school that resembles a fairytale castle!

#5: yummy food and drinks! ๐Ÿคค

The food in Taichung is absolutely amazing! I ate so much while visiting Taichung. I had breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, snacks, and then dinner. Even though I was full, I didn't want to miss out on the great food that Taichung had to offer.

Get lunch and boba at ChunShuiTang

Did you know that boba (also known as milk tea or bubble tea) was invented at ChunShuiTang?

When I first visited Taichung, I got to experience ChunShuiTang. Their food is incredible and their boba is even better!

You have to visit ChunShuiTang at least once when you're in Taichung, especially if you love boba!
