Fire Island is a stunning island located off the coast of Long Island, New York. It is famous for its breathtaking beaches, vibrant LGBTQ+ community, and the friendliest atmosphere you’ll ever experience.

What made my experience extremely amazing was the happiness that surrounded everyone, and there was no judgment for who you were. It was truly a paradise.

I fell in love with Fire Island the first time I visited it a few years ago with my roommates. Now it has become one of my favorite places to go swimming and relax. During each visit, I always encounter so many friendly people and make new friends.

I try to visit Fire Island at least once a year, especially when the warm weather starts creeping in in New York. Anyways, I can’t wait to share with you a bit about Fire Island!

Fire Island’s brief history

A majestic view of the iconic Fire Island Lighthouse, a landmark guiding ships for over 170 years.

Fire Island has a long and interesting history. Originally named Whaling Island, it was a hub for whaling goods and the first permanent resident was Jeremiah Smith, a notorious land pirate.

The Fire Island Lighthouse served as a landmark for transatlantic ships and still stands as both a landmark and a museum.

In the 1950s, real estate boomed and the island became a popular destination for visitors. Today, visitors can enjoy fishing, sailing, swimming, and hiking while learning about the island's fascinating history.

TIME ZONE
Fire Island operates on Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

BEST TIME TO VISIT
Fire Island truly comes alive during the summer months (June - August), offering the best weather for enjoying the beaches and outdoor activities.

However, my favorite time to visit would be in the fall! (September)

CURRENCY
The U.S. dollar (USD) is the official currency. While some establishments have adopted credit card readers, cash is still widely preferred, especially during peak season (Memorial Day weekend, summer months).

ATMs are available on the island, but it's wise to bring some cash beforehand to avoid potential withdrawal fees.

TIPPING
A 15-20% tip is customary for good service at restaurants.

CELL SERVICE
Cell service can be spotty on certain parts of the island. It's a good idea to download maps and any information you might need beforehand in case you lose reception.

SAFETY
Fire Island is known for its relaxed and safe atmosphere. However, general precautions like keeping an eye on your belongings and being mindful of your surroundings are always recommended, especially in crowded areas.

SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
Fire Island is a treasured natural environment. Be a responsible visitor by practicing Leave No Trace principles, packing out all trash, and respecting the delicate ecosystem.
